[origin: EP1375843A1] A first cam (14) moves a first rocker (12) to push down a first piston (10) in a cylinder (8) at an angle to the valve stem (1). There is a similar arrangement of second cam (15), second rocker arm (13), and second piston (11) in second cylinder (9). The rocker arms have a common pivot (18), and a projection (19) on the first rocker arm may engage the second when the second cam is out of action. The oil in both cylinders can push down a third piston (5) with a piston rod (6) pressing on top of the valve stem of a normal poppet valve. Oil channels (20,22) and a control valve (21) admit oil to make up for leakage from the system.
