[origin: WO02084234A1] The apparatus is an asynchronous data logger (ADL) comprises a sensor (1) and, in a preferred embodiment, three sampling channels. Each channel comprises an analogue to digital (A/D) converter (3), a sampling clock (4), a memory (5) and a microcontroller (6) that controls sampling, storing and communication of data in the particular channel. The ADL also has a master microcontroller (7) which provides overall control of the ADL and communicates with a data processing means which analyses the data provided by the sampling channels. The sampling channels sample the signal at first, second and third sampling rates, respectively, where the second sampling rate is n-R1 Hz and the third sampling rate is n+R2 Hz, and where R1 and R2 are much less than n and n is the first sampling rate. The data processing means then applies a frequency analysis technique to the sampling data of the channels to derive a resultant frequency of the signal.
