[origin: DE10227815A1] A non-contact (14) assembly (10) applies a liquid or paste coating to a moving (L) and supported (20) paper or carton web (12). The support unit (20) is formed by an endless belt or sieve (18) and presents the moving web to the non-contact coating assembly (14). The non-contact assembly (14) is a spray application unit. The drier is e.g. an infra-red and/or air drier (16). The coating medium incorporates a binding agent and/or starch. Immediately prior to the coating process (14) the web (12) has a dry mass content of pref. 58%.
