[origin: WO02091314A2] The invention relates to a device for renting or distributing and returning articles, more particularly tools, machines, etc., from an article storehouse to a client or a coworker. Said device comprises a central control unit for processing and storing article-related and client-related data; data input means for entering individual client characteristic data and storage means on the individual articles to store article characteristic data identifying the articles. The device is characterized by an electronically actuated lock assigned to each individual article to secure or lock the corresponding article in the article storehouse; means for data communication between the lock, the control unit and the data input means, wherein the lock releases the article upon receiving a release command triggered by the client characteristic data with access authorization and wherein the control unit receives a withdrawal signal characterizing a withdrawal process when the corresponding article is removed, in addition to means to send the corresponding article characteristic data of the control unit to a free lock when an article is again secured or locked.
