A current measurement unit can be connected to the source or sink. The device (2) has an output for electrical activation of an ignition element (9) for an engine combustion chamber, an ignition energy storage device (3) and a control input (5) from a controller (2) via a bi-directional data connection enabling information re the state of charge of the storage device and/or the ignition process to be returned to the controller. The control input is connected to a controllable current source (20,21) and to a controllable current sink (13,14) for imposing a current signal on the controller depending on the ignition voltage. A current measurement unit (18,19) that monitors the ignition voltage can be connected to the source or sink. Independent claims are also included for the following: a controller for an ignition device and an ignition system for an internal combustion engine.
