[origin: WO03075164A2] The invention relates to a method for operating an external storage medium unit, comprised of at least one stationary computer unit and of an external storage medium unit that can be connected to the computer unit via a connection port and a data connection. Inside the stationary computer unit, an operating program continuously monitors possible connection ports, which are provided for a data connection to an external storage medium, for an existing data connection. In the event a data connection to an external storage medium unit via a connection port exists, the operating program simultaneously monitors whether a pulse generator connected to the data connection has generated a voltage pulse on the external storage medium unit. Upon detection, additional processes, particularly for synchronizing data, can be initiated by the operating program. The impulse generator for generating the voltage pulse on the external storage medium unit is preferably a push-button device.
