[origin: EP1394314A2] The press (10) has a hydraulic pump feeding fluid to a hydraulic cylinder (19) with a piston rod (20) pushing down on a plate (21) with a flexible bolster (22). The bolster may consist of a bag filled with fluid and fits into a large diameter cylinder (23) containing the wet clothes (11). The clothes rest on a foundation plate (13) with perforations (14) for release of water. An ultrasonic distance sensor (40) on the fixed yoke of the press monitors the position of the piston, and there may be a thermostat keeping the temperature of the hydraulic fluid for the press above a given minimum.
