[origin: DE10128546A1] Process for automatically carrying out chromatographic investigations involves: (i) acquiring data; (ii) calculating retention times as a function of optimizing parameters based on a model; (iii) optimizing the retention times in the model by varying the optimizing parameters; (iv) carrying out a further chromatographic run with the above parameters. Process for automatically carrying out chromatographic investigations involves: (i) acquiring data; (ii) calculating retention times as a function of optimizing parameters based on a model; (iii) optimizing the retention times in the model by varying the optimizing parameters; (iv) carrying out a further chromatographic run with the above parameters; and (v) optionally repeating the above steps the deviations from the calculated and the measured retention times exceeds a prescribed limiting value. The data acquired comprises retention times of at least one component of a material mixture, preferably two different concentrations of an organic modifier, the temperature at which the retention times are acquired, the structural formulae of the components of the material mixture, the type of eluant and concentration of an organic modifier, and type of separating column used. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for automatically carrying out and optimizing chromatographic investigations comprising a chromatography separating column, an inlet chamber for the material mixture, a feed unit for the eluants, a detection and measuring unit at the outlet of the column, and a data acquiring unit for automatically and/or manually acquiring data.
