Abstract (en)

[origin: EP1396699A2] The laser deterrent system includes a laser gun carried by an operator with a battery power backpack, producing laser radiation which caused excitation of water molecules in the skin of criminals to be intercepted. This produces a disturbing sensation in the skin of the victim without causing permanent damage. The protection system uses a laser system mounted in a box (11) with a source of power (12), the laser itself being carried by the operator (13) whilst the power source may be mounted in a back pack. The laser action is started and stopped manually by the operator rather like a torch, and may be directed at a group of people to be controlled. The laser has a wavelength such that the energy is absorbed by the molecules of water held within the cells of the skin: the wavelength for this strong water absorption is in the region of 2 micro meters. The laser energy may be continuous or pulsed, and may be derived from a laser operating with a rare earth material.
