Abstract (en)

[origin: WO02090967A1] Disclosed is a method for operating a sensor element (10) for determining at least one gaseous component of a gas, especially an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. A measuring gas chamber (35) is incorporated into the sensor element (10), said measuring chamber being in contact with a gas which is disposed outside the senior element (10). A first electrode (31) and a second electrode (32) are provided in the measuring gas chamber (35) on a solid electrolyte (21) which conducts oxygen ions, and a third electrode (33) is provided outside the measuring gas chamber. The second electrode (32) is electrically connected to the third electrode (33) by the solid electrolyte (21), whereby oxygen can be pumped when a voltage is applied between the second electrode (32) and the third electrode (33). A lower voltage exists during a first time interval between the second and third electrode (32, 33) than that outside said time interval. When external conditions are constant, the partial pressure of the oxygen in the measuring gas chamber during the first time interval is greater, at least on average during said periods of time, than during a second time interval.
