[origin: WO03008232A1] The invention relates to a device for detecting the surrounding area of a motor vehicle (19), comprising a radiation source (12) for illuminating the surrounding area of a motor vehicle (10) and a recorder unit (18) for picking up image data of the area surrounding the motor vehicle. The radiation source (17) is configured in such a way that radiation pulses are produced with intervals occurring therebetween. The duration of the radiation pulses and the duration of the intervals is such that a human eye perceives a radiation intensity which is lower than the real radiation intensity of the individual radiation pulses and which does not blind the human eye. The recorder unit (18) is configured in such a way that it picks up image data from the surrounding area illuminated by a respective radiation pulse. The invention also relates to a corresponding method for detecting a surrounding area.
