Sensors time the movement of the leading edge of each item at two successive points, to give the start time for the application drum acceleration to meet the expression t5=t4?+(t4?-t3)\*(x6?-x4)\/(x4?-x3)?-TTr. x3 and x4 are the positions of the first and second sensor units; x6 the time where the leading label edge meets the item; t3 and t4 the timings of the leading item edge at the sensors; t5 the drum acceleration start time; TTr the drum acceleration time to bring the label speed on its surface to the mean item conveying speed.
