Abstract (en)
[origin: DE10134671A1] Applying a precious metal tip (1) to an electrode (5) comprises welding the tip to the electrode; and fusing the tip in a first region and the electrode in a second region to form a mixed alloy. The first region is selected so that it completely surrounds the material of the tip. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) the electrode used in the process; and (ii) a spark plug comprising an electrode and a precious metal tip. Preferred Features: The welding step is a resistance welding step. Both regions are fused using a laser having a pulse of approximately 1 kW for approximately 10 ms. The electrode is made from nickel or a nickel alloy. The tip is made from gold, iridium or platinum.
