[origin: WO03014543A1] The invention relates to a honeycomb element (1) which is maintained in a housing (5) and which is provided with a covering surface (2), especially an exhaust gas system in an internal combustion engine . The honeycomb (1) has an axial length (L) and the covering surface (2) is surrounded by at least one metal sheet (4) which in sections is bent into several layers which can move radially towards each other between the covering surface (2) and the housing (5), whereby overhanging bulges (3) of the metal sheet layers are created in the direction of the periphery by said bends; said bulges (3) extending forwards and backwards in the direction of the periphery. The inventive honeycomb body maintained in a housing can expand thermally in an almost unimpeded manner in relation to the housing, whereupon a durable fixation of the honeycomb element in the housing, especially in the housing of an exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine; can be obtained. The invention can be used more particularly for honeycomb elements with high channel thicknesses of 800 cpsi and sheet metal thicknesses of less than 0:025 mm.
