[origin: WO03015115A1] The invention relates to a self-recovering current-limiting device (10) with liquid metal. Electrodes are arranged in the region of the base of the chamber and one or several insulating separating walls are arranged between the electrodes (13.1, 13.2). The upper edge of the separating walls (6) lies below the free surface (18.1) of the liquid metal (18) and the current path (W) is embodied such that said path runs with a parallel counter flux in adjacent chambers and turns through 180 DEG above each separating wall. The separating walls have a relatively thin embodiment so that the electromagnetic forces easily pass through the separating walls. An annular arrangement gives a geometry which is well screened against external fields.
