[origin: WO0241430A2] A prior art fuel cell system is comprised of a stack of fuel cells each having at least one membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and an associated bipolar plate. In order to improve the operational properties, the invention provides that the MEA (10, 20), with the provision of bipolar plates (15; 21, 22), is structured as a self-supporting assembly. A assembly of this type is suited for a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, especially a high-temperature proton exchange membrane (HT-PEM) fuel cell.
