[origin: WO03007740A2] A safety garment such as a waistcoat (1) has a light source (8) in the form of a flexible, elongate electroluminescent cord (8) attached to the outside of the waistcoat (1). A power source (12) located in a pocket (20) is connectable to the light source (8) for illuminating the cord (8) to make a person wearing the waistcoat (1) visible to an observer. The light source (8) and power source (12) are detachable from the waistcoat (1) to permit the waistoat (1) to be cleaned, for example washed. Also a damaged or broken light source (8) and/or power source (12) may be replaced. The cord (8) is housed in a light transmitting carrier (24) that protects the cord (8) from dirt or water in use. The carrier (24) is detachable from the waistcoat (1). In other embodiments (Figures 6 to 10), the carrier (124, 224) is permanently attached to the waiscoat (1) and the cord (108, 208) is detachable from the carrier (124, 224).
