[origin: WO03018251A1] The invention relates to a method and a device for determining the position of rotation-driven tools (14) in machine tools. According to the invention, the moment of separation of the tool whose position is to be determined and a measuring beam (18), for example the laser beam of a light barrier, are used for this purpose. The tool whose position is to be determined is first positioned in such a manner that the measuring beam is interrupted and is then displaced to a measuring position in which the separation of the tool and the measuring beam occurs, and the measuring beam is no longer interrupted by the tool during at least one complete rotation. The moment of separation is used to determine the position of the tool.
