The invention is characterized in that the mail (10) is fed by a first means of conveyance (20) associated with a rotating device (40) used to rotate and/or turn the mail (10); graphic characteristics of at least the surface of the mail (10) are detected during conveyance of the mail (10) on the first means of conveyance; the graphic characteristics thus detected are evaluated, information being obtained from the result of the evaluation of the graphic characteristics determining which surface of the mail (10) is to be printed; the rotating device (40) rotates and/or turns the mail (10) in such a way that the surface of the mail (10) to be printed is oriented in a desired manner and fed to a printing means disposed in the printing device.
