[origin: WO03032196A2] The invention concerns a method for comparing two composite multimedia documents comprising each at least two elementary media (images, sounds, video signals, animated vector graphics or texts), comprising the following steps: a) assigning a meta-identifier to each of the multimedia documents, said meta-identifier including in the form of a weighted hypergraph of nodes and of relationships between said nodes, meta-segments unequivocally identifying elementary media constituting the multimedia document concerned, b) recursion on the secondary trees of intra-media relationships of the elementary media of each of the documents, c) for the hypergraph of each elementary media of the first document, a maximization process of the identification with the hypergraph of an elementary media of the second document, d) for the hypergraph of each elementary media of the first document, determining costs of editing operations providing maximum identifications with a hypergraph of an elementary media of the second document and expressing distances between the elementary media on the basis of costs, e) recursion on the main tree of production of inter-media relationships between the elementary media of each of the documents, f) for the hypergraph of the set of elementary media of the first document, a maximization process of the identification with the hypergraph of the set of elementary media of the second document, g) for the hypergraph of the set of elementary media of the first document, determining the cost of editing operation providing maximum identification with a hypergraph of the set of elementary media of the second document, and expressing the distance between the first and second multimedia documents on the basis of said cost.
