[origin: WO03037435A1] The invention relates to a device for rapid evacuation of people from edifices on fire or in other dangerous situations. The inventive device consists of an abseiling device which slides downward by the force of gravity on a downward hanging rope upon engagement. A braking device ensures that the speed at which the abseiling device slides downward does not exceed a given maximum value. The rope is secured or can be secured on a pivotally articulated extension arm which is firmly connected to the edifice. The abseiling device can be engaged and disengaged by means of a rapid clamping device.
