Abstract (en)

[origin: WO03035482A1] An apparatus (10, 110) and method for roll packing a variety of compressible materials (14, 114) includes a radially collapsible mandrel (12, 112) for easy removal of the roll packed material (14, 114) without tearing or telescoping of the material (14, 114). The apparatus (10, 110) further includes a compression roller (26, 122) which acts in conjunction with the mandrel (12, 112) to compress the material (14, 114) as it is wound upon the mandrel (12, 112). The spacing between the compression roller (26,122) and the mandrel (12,112) may be varied to adjust the amount of compression in the rolled material (14, 114). A roll handling device (58, 182) facilitates the removal of finished rolls from the apparatus (10, 110). In one embodiment of the invention, a packing material dispenser (36, 152) supplies packing material (38, 154) to the in-fed compressible material (14, 114) as it is wound upon the mandrel (12, 112).
