[origin: WO03042523A1] In order to control and adjust the starting mode of an internal combustion engine (1), a method is provided wherein a rail pressure is compared with a threshold value when the starting process is activated. According to said comparison, a first or second mode is set, wherein the rail pressure (pCR) for the starting process is controlled in a first mode and adjusted in a second mode. According to the invention, once the second mode is initially set, it is maintained for the rest of the starting process. As a result, high pressure fluctuations caused by mode changes can be prevented in an effective manner.
