Abstract (en)
[origin: WO03048533A1] The invention provides a controller (10) and cylinder deactivation system to regenerate an exhaust aftertreatment device (60) for a multicylinder engine (5) that operates primarily at an air/fuel ratio that is lean of stoichiometry. The invention uses the cylinder deactivation system to control temperature and air/fuel ratio of an exhaust gas feedstream going into an aftertreatment device (60). The invention also increases the amount of fuel delivered to each activated cylinder by an amount sufficient to maintain operating power of the engine. The regeneration action includes describing NOx from a NOx adsorbed catalyst (64), desulfating the NOx adsorbed catalyst (64), and purging a diesel particulate trap (68).
