[origin: WO03055374A1] The aim of the invention is to provide a device and a method for collecting waste water in dishwashers, which facilitate a reliable separation of waste water that contains food residues, in order to substantially reduce the water consumption of a dishwasher. This is achieved by a device for collecting waste water in dishwashers comprising a pump well (1) and a sump section (2), which is located on the underside of said well and is connected to the latter (1) via an inflow section (5). The waste water flows from the pump well (1) into the sump section (2) via the inflow section (5) and can be blocked by means of a valve (3). The aim is also achieved by an inventive method for collecting waste water in dishwashers, in particular using the inventive device for collecting waste water in dishwashers, whereby the waste water accumulates in a pump well (1), which is connected to a sump section located on its underside (2) by means of a valve (3) in an inflow section (5) and said valve (3) can be opened or blocked according to requirements in order to permit at least part of the waste water to flow into the sump section (2), at least said part of the waste water thus collected being evacuated using a liquor pump or circulating pump (7).
