[origin: WO03052104A1] Use of a gene which codes a sialidase activity as a reporter gene is described. The gene may be used as a reporter gene in eukaryotic organisms or cells. A modified gene encoding a protein havin g sialidase enzymatic activity is also described. The nucleotide sequence encodes a prokaryotic or eukaryotic sialidase enzymatic activity preferably the nucleotide sequence encodes a Clostridium perfringens sialidase activity.
