Abstract (en)
[origin: EP1467019A2] In a process to condition the surface of a paper or carton web prior to the application (16) of a coating, the web passes through a wide nip (3). The nip is formed by a first drum (13) with an elastic surface mantle and a second drum (12) with a hard surface mantle. The surface elasticity of the first drum is no more than 10,000 MPa and has a Shore hardness of 100 Sh (D). The tensile force in the soft nip (15) is no more than 30 N/mm. The tensile force in the wide nip (3) is no more than 3 N/mm. The wide nip (3) has a heating system which heats the web to at least 100C. The mantle (6) and soft drum (13) are presented to the same side of the web.
