Abstract (en)

[origin: EP1468954A1] The escalator or moving pavement has a handrail construction installed on a balustrade and the handrail (4) of which is deflected by a driven support pulley (10). A handrail drive (20) is provided to peripherally drive the handrail. The handrail drive has a drive pinion (23) driving the support pulley and is a friction wheel or toothed wheel. The handrail drive is installed in the balustrade base and has a variable motor (21) to drive the drive pinion.
