[origin: WO03060905A1] The invention relates to a system and method for cost-efficiently producing and distributing copy-protected and use-protected electronic audio and visual media and the data contents thereof. The data contents of the electronic media are coded in such a way that said data contents cannot be played back or displayed without the recipient who is authorized to make restricted use thereof carrying out cryptographic processes and that said electronic media cannot be played back in full or at all without carrying out relevant cryptographic processes again when transmitted to third parties. The inventive solution consists of providing the recipient with a cryptographic module which decodes or deciphers, and subsequently transmits to a playback unit in a re-coded or re-ciphered manner, fully or partially coded or ciphered data contents of electronic audio and picture media or keys for decoding or deciphering said data contents in such a way that the audio and visual information can be played in the playback unit without the electronic data contents being available in an uncoded form on the transmission path, at the input our output of the cryptographic module, or at the input of the playback unit.
