Abstract (en)

[origin: WO03061494A1] A variable angle clamp (50) is provided for use with a spinal implant assembly having a spinal rod (R), a Schantz screw (45), and a connector (10) receiving a spinal rod (R). The connector (10) includes a stem and a washer (20) mounted on the stem (16) with a first clamping surface defining a variable angle feature. The stem (16) terminates in a T-bar (17) defining a second clamping surface. The variable angle clamp (50) defines a bore (66) configured to receive the Schantz screw (45). An outer surface of the clamp body defines a variable angle feature (56) for interengagement with the first clamping surface, and an opposite outer surface configured for pressure contact with the second clamping surface. In one embodiment, the clamp includes a pair of clamp halves (52 & 54) communicating with a bore (66) for receiving the shank of the screw (47). In another embodiment, the clamp body (100) defines a notch (120) therethrough in communication with the bore (116) configured so that a portion of the washer (20') extends through the notch and into the bore to contact the bone screw therein.
