Abstract (en)

A method for producing calendered paper by an on-line manufacturing system comprising at least a paper machine and a multi-nip calender. A wet laid paper web is pressed and then dried in multiple dryer groups before calendering in a multi-nip calender. A cross machine direction (CMD) moisture profile or a variable related to said profile is measured at one or more positions. The results are used to vary the web moisture to give an even CMD moisture content profile at calender entry. The moisture profile may be altered by a steam box in the pressing section or by other means and the profile measurements may be carried out at positions (A,B,C,D). An independent claim is included for: An apparatus such as a hood for applying hot air to said web in passage around a drying cylinder with means to control the web area open to said hot air. Preferred Features: The web moisture may be controlled by heating or cooling parts of said web using a variety of disclosed means or by adding water as a mist or spray. The temperature profile of the web in the CMD may also be measured. Control of the web moisture profile at different solids content or dry material content (DMC) in the process is also disclosed.
