[origin: WO03077611A1] The invention relates to ballast for a discharge lamp (16) comprising a direct-current supply phase (2), high-frequency timed semiconductor switches (10, 11) for modifying the direction of current through the discharge lamp (16), a choke inductance (17) connected in series to the discharge lamp (16) and discharge circuits (19, 20) for the semiconductor switches (10, 11), each of which consists of a capacitor (19) connected in parallel to said semiconductor switches (10, 11) and a current converter (20) connected in anti-parallel. The aim of the invention is to guarantee an effective discharge of the semiconductor switches (10, 11), even during a no-load operation. To achieve this, a series connection of an auxiliary inductance (21) and a switch (22) that is operated depending on the voltage of the discharge lamp (16) is connected in parallel to said discharge lamp (16).
