[origin: WO03080270A1] The invention relates to a method and device for joining at least two parts (2, 3), which overlap at least in part, by using a mechanical joining process that does not involve prepunching and with the aid of a deformable auxiliary joining element (1). The invention also relates to the auxiliary joining element (1) itself, whereby the auxiliary joining element (1) is pressed into the parts (2, 3) to be joined by an upper tool (6) that is displaced at least with an axial advancing movement against an essentially flat lower tool (4), and these parts (2, 3) are joined to one another while both the parts as well as the auxiliary joining element (1) are plastically deformed.
