[origin: WO03082639A1] An impact detector for detecting and evaluating an impact and generating an output signal to deploy a pedestrian protection system (119) on a motor vehicle includes a sensor arrangement (101) to be mounted at the front of the vehicle to detect an impact. An eveluator (108) is provided to evaluate the output of the sensor and to generate an output signal when a predetrmined threshold is exceeded, so that the pedestrian protection system (119) is not actuated by an impact with a very light object. Additionally a chassis-mounted accelerometer (115) is provided to provide a signal indicative of the total deceleration applied to the vehicle. An inhibitor (109) is provided to inhibit generation of the signal that actuates the pedestrian protection system (119) if the output signal from the accelerometer (115) exceeds a predetermined threshold.
