[origin: EP1489033A1] An elevator shaft has a mechanism that simultaneously raises and lowers two cars (1, 1'). Each car has its own cable (5, 5') operated discrete drive unit (4, 4') and cabin counterweight (2, 2'). Each cabin has a guide rail (3, 3'). The counterweights move under the guidance of rails (6, 6', 7, 7'). The motors (4, 4') are located within the shaft (11) close to sidewalls (111, 112).
