Abstract (en)

[origin: WO03082655A1] The invention relates to a light-weight crossbeam between two lateral edge zones of a vehicle structure, comprising at least one holding element for connection of functional elements of the vehicle. The one-part crossbeam (1), in the axial direction, consists of at least two sections (2, 3) of different wall thicknesses and optionally different outer diameters, whereby respective continuous areas of transition (4) are disposed between the sections (2, 3). Most crossbeams require a high rigidity only on the driver's side, especially when they are provided with a tunnel support. The inventive crossbeam (1) makes use of this fact for forming a light-weight crossbeam (1) by configuring the section (3) of the crossbeam (1) with a lower wall thickness on the passenger's side. According to today's state of knowledge a maximum wall thickness on the passenger's side of 50 % of the wall thickness on the driver's side is perfectly sufficient.
