Abstract (en)

The cellular communication system includes a number of base stations through which a mobile unit communicates. The mobile unit maintains a list of active base stations with which it can communicate. One of the active stations is in communication with the mobile and uses this communication to measure the round-trip-delay between mobile and station. This delay is compared with a threshold and if this is exceeded, and the base station is a boundary station, then a hard hand-off is executed. The mobile can also monitor candidate base stations and if a triggering pilot signal is detected a hand-off can be triggered. Preferably the handoff can be between base stations controlled by different mobile switching centres.

In a communications network a network user communicates through a remote unit with another user via at least one base station. The communications network includes a first mobile switching centre for controlling communications through a first set of base stations including a first base station. A list of active base stations is stored at the remote unit, the list comprising an entry corresponding to each base station with which active communication is established. The base station has an entry on the list of active base station and is a reference base station. The remote unit stores a list of candidate base stations comprising an entry corresponding to each base station through which active communication may be established. A hand off of an active communication signal is initiated from the first base station to the second base station if a pilot signal of the second base station on the list of candidate base stations corresponds to a triggering pilot signal.
