[origin: WO03085244A1] The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine comprising a compression ignition, according to which a quantity of exhaust gas which is retained in the combustion chamber is regulated according to the operating point by varying valve control times. An ion current signal is measured by means of an ion current sensor which is disposed inside the combustion chamber. The position of the 50-percent mass conversion point of the on-going combustion is detected from the course of the ion current signal so as to be able to control the combustion process during a subsequent cycle by adjusting the operating parameters.
