[origin: WO03091145A1] The invention relates to a drive system for escalators and passenger conveyors, comprising at least one drive motor which co-operates, optionally, with a gear system, at least one drive chain embodied in the form of a sprocket chain, deflecting elements for the sprocket chain and means for minimising the polygon effect occurring when the chain is moved inwards and circulates. The drive chain comprises a separation such that a maximum of two elements are used along each step or pallet and the means is formed by at least one device which is used to actuate the drive motor or the reversing plate(s) or the drive chain at a non-constant number of rotations or rotational speed.
