Abstract (en)

[origin: DE10319786A1] Shape of constituent parts of mixed and composite waste fragments are changed by mechanically induced shock wave treatment, causing metal residues to be permanently deformed into rounded lumps, while plastics tend to resume original shape. The difference in shapes then allows the fragments to be separated. A typical separator comprises a liquid filled, annular processing chamber (28) with walls (22,22a) which have opposed, radially extending fingers or ribs for impacting waste fragments, and are rotated relative to each other. Alternatively, the mechanical energy may be provided by an agitator (26) within a stationary annulus. Comminuted waste (30), e.g 10-50 mm fragments, is charged into the top of the chamber, and compressed air (34) may be introduced at the bottom of the processing chamber to assist gravitational separation.
