Abstract (en)

[origin: WO03097584A1] Disclosed is a method for the catalyst-free production of alkoxybenzonitriles by substituting monohalogenated initial compounds of general formula (I), in which X represents Cl or Br and Y represents H, alkyl, or aryl. The inventive method is characterized by the fact that the initial compound and an alcoholate of general formula Z-OAlk, in which Z represents Na<+> or K<+> and Alk represents C1 to C4 alkyl, are jointly heated to 90 to 250 DEG C and then maintained at the final temperature for 2 to 10 hours, whereupon the reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature and restirred after adding water, and the final product is separated in the end. The inventive method, for which preferably benzonitriles that are chlorinated and/or bromated in position 2 or 4 are used as the initial compound while sodium methylate or sodium ethylate is used as the alcoholate, allows the respective final products to be produced in an inexpensive, economical and environmentally friendly manner while obtaining very good yields and a high degree of purity.
