Abstract (en)

[origin: WO03095510A1] The invention relates to a method for producing a low-odor hydrogel-forming polymer based on acrylic acid, comprising the following steps: a) producing a polymeric hydrogel by radically polymerizing, in an aqueous polymerization medium, a monomer composition containing at least 50 wt. % of acrylic acid, and transforming the hydrogel into a particulate hydrogel or into a hydrogel-forming powder, and optionally; b) treating the particulate hydrogel or the hydrogel-forming powder with a crosslinking-active substance having at least two functional groups that react with the carboxyl groups of the polymer. The invention is characterized in that acrylic acid used in step a) contains less than 400 ppm ethanoic acid and/or propionic acid. The invention also relates to the hydrogel-forming polymers obtained according to said method, and to the use thereof.
