[origin: WO2004004988A1] Disclosed is a device for cutting a bar of material, comprising a bar-guiding unit (1) which has a guiding axis (10) that runs in the longitudinal direction of the bar, and a cutting tool (3) which is driven around a rotating shaft (4) that runs parallel to the guiding axis (10) and is provided with at least one knife. Said knife comprises at least one blade (7) which extends at least across one section of the circumference, runs in a spiraling manner around the rotating shaft (4), and is located on a surface of revolution having the rotating shaft (4) as an axis of rotation. The radial distance of the blade (7) from the rotating shaft (4) increases along the peripheral extension thereof counter to the sense of rotation at least by a degree that corresponds to the maximum cutting depth. In order to create advantageous cutting conditions, the inventive bar-guiding unit (1) comprises a guiding cylinder (2) that is provided with an engaging opening (9) for the knife, which is delimited by the cutting surface (12) between the guiding cylinder (2) and the surface of revolution defined by the blade (7).
