[origin: WO2004005748A1] The invention relates to a shock absorber (2) comprising a piston rod (12) that is located so that it can be displaced longitudinally in an external housing (14). The aim of the invention is to provide a shock absorber, which is particularly suitable for recording the position of its piston rod (12) in relation to the external housing (14) using simple, robust means in a reliable manner. To achieve this, the inventive piston rod (12) is provided with a magnetic encoder (18), which comprises a permanent magnetic material with a modulated field line progression and/or modulated magnetic field strength extending in the longitudinal direction.
