Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2390893A] A particle monitor comprises a light source 90 for generating a measurement beam on a first side of the particle flow 70, a system for directing the beam to the other side of the flow without it being scattered by the particles, and a reflector 210 for directing the beam though the flow from the second side to the first so that a detector 80 may measure light scattered by the particles on the first side. Alternative embodiments include: A scattered light measurement method and apparatus in which light which is scattered by a transmission window and passes through an aperture is prevented from reaching a detector; A scattered light particle measurement system in which a filter has a transmission function which alters the intensity of radiation detected from light scattered by particles of a first size relative to light scattered by particles of a second size; A scattered light particle measurement system in which measurement and calibration beams pass through substantially the same window regions and in which the same detector may be used for measurement or calibration; and An apparatus for reducing peripheral light levels of a laser or similar light source comprising: a light source, first and second reflectors which define apertures, a light absorber and a lens.
