Said method is characterised in that the oxidation is carried out in a reaction device (1) comprising a sump region at the lower end, a head region at the upper end and a reaction zone (1) between the sump region and the head region, that the reaction mixture is maintained at boiling point in the reaction zone and that the oxidant is introduced into the reaction zone in at least two sub-streams (5).
