Abstract (en)

[origin: WO2004025111A1] In conventional electric fuel pumps, fuel is directly suctioned into a pump part such that the housing and electric motor of the electric fuel pump arranged downstream from the pump part are subjected to a pressure build-up from the pump part. Since modern-day electric fuel pumps operate at comparable high pressures, they must be sealed downstream from the pump part and this requires a considerable amount of effort. In the inventive unit, the sealing requirements vis a vis the housing are significantly reduced, which leads to a significant reduction in production costs. According to the invention, an actuator (15) is to arranged on a suction side (20) of the housing (2), such that fuel is suctioned via an inlet connection (5) of the housing (2) past the actuator (15). As a result, pressure is initially increased in the pump part (14) and the fuel subsequently leaves the unit via an outlet connection (9), whereupon only a small volume of the unit is subjected to comparable high pressure.
