Abstract (en)

[origin: WO03106199A1] A two part run-flat device (13) for fitting on the outer circumference of a wheel (11) inside an inflatable tyre (12). The device (13) comprising a first part in the form of an annular ring (14) made up of a plurality (preferably three) of arcuate segments (15) that sits on the outer circumference of a second part comprising a sleeve (16). Radially extending shear pins (43) are provided between the segments (15) and the sleeve (16) to restrict relative rotational movement between the segments (15) and the sleeve (16) during normal running of the wheel (11). The shear pins (43) are designed to break at the interface between the segments (15) and the sleeve (16) when the tyre deflates and contacts the outer circumference of the segments (15). The inner sleeve (16) is shaped and dimensioned to fit on the rim of a metal wheel (11). In use when the tyre deflates and contacts the outer circumference of the segments (15), the segments (15) break the shear pins and rotate relative to the inner ring (16).
