[origin: DE10242970A1] The device has a tunable electrical oscillation circuit, a mechanical oscillator that can be stimulated to resonance by the circuit and a control circuit for tuning the oscillator circuit to a resonant frequency of the mechanical oscillator. A device compares the mechanical oscillator amplitude and/or frequency with a value and detects a fault in the mechanical oscillator if the amplitude and/or frequency of the value differs in a defined manner. The device has a tunable electrical oscillation circuit (12), a mechanical oscillator that can be stimulated to resonance by the circuit and a control circuit (16-20) for tuning the oscillator circuit to a resonant frequency of the mechanical oscillator. A device (22,23) compares the amplitude and/or frequency of the mechanical oscillator with a value and detects a fault in the mechanical oscillator if the amplitude and/or frequency of the value differs in a defined manner. AN Independent claim is also included for a method of detecting a fault in a level measurement system.
