[origin: WO2004031671A1] The invention relates to a method for the thermal treatment of a workpiece (3), in particular for the drying and/or curing of a coating (13', 14'), whereby the workpiece (3) runs through a conventional oven (10, 10') with a given speed. The workpiece runs through the oven with a speed significantly increased with relation to a set speed, such that the thermal energy imparted on passing through is significantly less than a required total energy for completion of the thermal treatment. The workpiece (3) runs through an additional heating run (A) before or after the oven (10, 10') in which the above is subjected to the effect of electromagnetic radiation with a maximum radiation strength in the near infrared wavelength range and with high power density, in particular of more than 100 kW/ M<2>, and in which the energy required to complete the thermal treatment is applied.
